In this article, Iris, a trustee with the BDD Foundation in the UK, recalls how her BDD emerged at age 11 after being bullied. She struggled with it until things got significantly worse when she was 38, and eventually sought treatment.
As Professor Katharine Phillips is quoted as having said in the article, not all mental health professionals are trained in how to identify and treat BDD. It’s important that people struggling with BDD and related issues seek out clinicians who are experienced in this area.
