This article discusses Omari, a 29 year old young man with BDD whose body concerns developed around the time of his 16th birthday. Omari’s main appearance concern was to do with his eyes and the area around them.
It describes some of the BDD safety behaviours he would engage in, including using make up and wearing glasses to hide his perceived “flaws”, avoiding mirrors, and making a concerted effort to avoid using the word “eyes” in case it would draw other people’s attention to his eyes.
It also describes just how distressing and pre-occupying BDD can become, and how it can lead to people withdrawing from social activities and becoming very depressed, like it did for Omari.
Importantly, Omari explains how after he commenced therapy, things began to get better for him, and now his life is “hugely on track”.
As Omari says, “recovery from BDD really is possible."
